Nimrod – The Mighty Hunter “Woodford’s Final Aircraft”

The Nimrod first flew from Woodford Aerodrome, Cheshire in 1967. The aircraft would be produced is many guises over the next four decades including the AEW, MR2, R1 and the ill fated MRA.4

The final chapter in the Nimrod story was the MRA.4. Having first flown in August 2004, the project was well into the testing phase by the time it was cancelled in 2010 following a defence spending review.

Our coin celebrates the MRA.4 variant in planform overlaid on a Union Flag backdrop on the obverse with the wording “Woodford’s Final Aircraft” centrally underneath.

The reverse depicts the first Nimrod produced at Woodford, the Mk.1. The nickname given to the aircraft during its time with the RAF features underneath, “The Mighty Hunter.”

Manufactured using a brass-based blank, the coin is struck to give incredible detail that is filled with vivid quality enamels. At 2 inches (51mm) in diameter, the coin is 3mm thick and weighs 50 grams, so is highly tactile – complimenting what is a quality keepsake.

This coin comes complete in a fitted black presentation box.

Having a soft spot for the much missed Nimrod, I just had to have this to go along with some of my other Nimrod memorabilia.
I was not disappointed, the quality of the coin is to the usual extremely high standard of Club Coins products.
The coin depicts both the first Nimrod to built the MR.1 and the last Nimrod to built the MRA.4 both set against the Union Jack. The level of detail is outstanding, and the colours and weight of the coin really add to the quality of the coin. Coming in a nice presentation box just finishes it off a treat.
If you’re a Nimrod fan, an aviation coin collector or part of the ex Nimrod Family whether you were flying crew or ground crew, it’s a must buy and I highly recommend the coin.
