Californian Bruce Penhall was the poster boy of speedway during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bruce was one of a wave of Americans who made the trip over to race in the UK and spent his whole career with the Cradley Heath Heathens. Upon winning the 1981 World Championship at Wembley Stadium, Bruce became only the second American to lift the World trophy after Jack Milne in 1937. 1982 saw the World Final being held at the Los Angeles Coliseum where Bruce successfully defended his title.
Penhall’s other successes include being World Pairs Champion in 1981 with Bobby Schwartz, World Team Cup winner in 1982 and American National Champion in 1981 & 1982.
